Water Resources Management Program
The Yahara Watershed Improvement Network (Yahara WINs), led by the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) and including over 30 partners, is conducting an adaptive management pilot project for nutrient reduction in the Six Mile Creek Watershed located north of Lake Mendota. As part of the pilot project, Yahara WINs will study how to reduce many sources of phosphorous and has partnered with the University of Wisconsin- Madison Water Resources Management (WRM) Program to investigate historic and transient sediment laden with phosphorous.
Using several model wetlands and streams they will investigate the following questions:
How much sediment is in temporary storage?
How much phosphorus is attached to that sediment?
When is sediment deposited, and when does it move?
Is there a cost-effective way to remove or stabilize the phosphorus?

Some Friendly Reminders for Dog Owners

Animals that are considered running at large may be seized and impounded by a humane or law enforcement officer.

Building Season is Here and New Shoreland Regulations are in Effect.
The snow is gone, the ground is thawed, and many are itching to start building, construction or renovation projects. The Dane County Department of Planning and Development reminds you to call before you build. In response to state code amendments, Dane County has changed its regulations for projects near waterways. If you’re planning a construction project near water in unincorporated towns, please contact the Zoning Division as early in the process as possible. County staff can help determine what permits you will need and help you avoid surprises. For more information click HERE
Intergovernmental Collaboration Reaches New Heights in Dane Co.
Sixteen Dane County communities participated to benefit from the Capital Area Regional Planning Commission (RPC) Future Urban Development Area planning program. The Capital Area RPC provided staff support and analysis to proactively plan for the often controversial Urban Service Area amendment process to expand municipal sewer and water.
According to letters to the Capita Area RPC from the City of Middleton, Village of Deforest, and Towns of Westport, Springfield Vienna and Windsor, the first communities to complete the process, FUDA provided an “opportunity for intergovernmental collaboration that has solidified the relationships” amongst neighboring jurisdictions and “fostered continued communication about the potential land uses for areas where cooperative plans do not exist.” Click HERE for more information. Madison, WI. April 5, 2013 – Motorcycle season is finally here – almost a whole month later than last year. The late arrival of spring weather, combined with a tough winter, means our roads are extremely hazardous for motorcycles right now due to a significant amount of remaining salt, sand and winter debris. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit strongly encourages motorcyclists to ride with extreme care as we await a few significant rainfalls which will help wash off our roadways.
